User experience is a broad discipline, and anyone who practices UX design should have skills in many different fields. While it’s impossible to summarize all the helpful information in one article, here are the seven essential rules every UX designer should follow to create excellent user experiences:

 

1.   UX is not UI

Swapping UX with UI design is a common mistake among many designers, but it is vital to understand the main differences between UX and UI disciplines. Many articles discuss the difference between the two disciplines; however, to cut a long story short, User Interface is a space where users interact with a product, while User Experience is an emotional outcome after interactions with a product.

 

2.   Know your audience

One of the most critical factors to consider when designing a product/platform is the audience. If you plan to create a product your users will love, you must know your audience’s wants and needs. This means user research should be a primary part of the process. It’s vital to keep your end-users top of mind before you start designing, allowing you to provide value for people who’ll eventually use your product.

 

3.   Adapt design for short attention spans

The average human attention span has considerably declined as users consume shorter forms of content. Designers need to cope with this behaviour to get people the information they need as quickly as possible.

 

4.   Use actual content 

Almost every product getting designed and developed is based on content, whether text, images, or videos. However, many designers don’t take content into account during the design phase — they use placeholders instead of actual copy or images. While such a design might look great on the artboard, the picture might be different when the same design is filled with actual content.

 

5.   Keep it simple and consistent

With digital products, simplicity is vital. Your users shouldn’t have to read lengthy instructions to know how to use an app. As an interface designer, it is your job to subtly guide users from where they are to where they need to go. For example, different colour schemes can be used on various pages across a website, and such design decisions can cause confusion and frustration in users. Hence, it’s always essential to keep the design element familiar, reinforcing the most important facets of your design at every turn. 

 

6.   Recognition is key

Due to the limitations of human memory and short attention spans, designers must ensure users can recognize how to use certain features of the product. Strive to minimize the cognitive load by making information and interface functions visible and easily accessible.

 

7.  Don’t be afraid to make mistakes

There is potential for tremendous growth when you learn from your mistakes. It is essential to keep trying new UX design techniques and approaches to find the one that works the best for you and your clients.
